Summary

Outlander meets Camelot” (Kirsty Logan, author of The Gracekeepers) in the first book of an exciting historical trilogy that reveals the untold story of Languoreth—a powerful and, until now, tragically forgotten queen of sixth-century Scotland—twin sister of the man who inspired the legendary character of Merlin。

Intelligent, passionate, rebellious, and brave, Languoreth is the unforgettable heroine of The Lost Queen, a tale of conflicted loves and survival set against the cinematic backdrop of ancient Scotland, a magical land of myths and superstition inspired by the beauty of the natural world。 One of the most powerful early medieval queens in British history, Languoreth ruled at a time of enormous disruption and bloodshed, when the burgeoning forces of Christianity threatened to obliterate the ancient pagan beliefs and change her way of life forever。

Together with her twin brother Lailoken, a warrior and druid known to history as Merlin, Languoreth is catapulted into a world of danger and violence。 When a war brings the hero Emrys Pendragon, to their door, Languoreth collides with the handsome warrior Maelgwn。 Their passionate connection is forged by enchantment, but Languoreth is promised in marriage to Rhydderch, son of the High King who is sympathetic to the followers of Christianity。 As Rhydderch's wife, Languoreth must assume her duty to fight for the preservation of the Old Way, her kingdom, and all she holds dear。

“Moving, thrilling, and ultimately spellbinding” (BookPage), The Lost Queen brings this remarkable woman to life—rescuing her from obscurity, and reaffirming her place at the center of the most enduring legends of all time。 “Moving, thrilling, and ultimately spellbinding, The Lost Queen is perfect for readers of historical fiction like The Clan of the Cave Bear and Wolf Hall, and for lovers of fantasy like Outlander and The Mists of Avalon” (BookPage)。

This was quite a story, of wizardry, family, love, and the mystical beauty of the Scotland countryside。 I would awake in the night either because of my damn throbbing ankle or my husband's snoring and my mind would wander to Languoreth and her brother Lailoken。 I loved hearing their names on this extremely entertaining audiobook。 It was a fun journey on horseback, through misty fields, trying to figure out how the old ways of wisdom keepers and heelers could persevere。 If only the Dragon warrior This was quite a story, of wizardry, family, love, and the mystical beauty of the Scotland countryside。 I would awake in the night either because of my damn throbbing ankle or my husband's snoring and my mind would wander to Languoreth and her brother Lailoken。 I loved hearing their names on this extremely entertaining audiobook。 It was a fun journey on horseback, through misty fields, trying to figure out how the old ways of wisdom keepers and heelers could persevere。 If only the Dragon warriors could keep everyone safe from harm。 (Cue my man's horn filled with wine and make him muscular with eyes that shine like emeralds!) 。。。more

Languoreth only meets the refugees and we're treated to a strange tug-of-war of authority between her and a stranger who has the ability to heal。 No action。Her people's sacred site was actively despoiled by a a group of zealot Christians? Languoreth finds out the morning after。A bloody riot sparked by her father's advisor dumping a corpse in the high council? Father holds off the horde and Languoreth faints, only to wake up safe in a carriage with her father and the rest of her loved ones。 She fucking sleeps through the action and everyone is fine。 No losses from a supposedly dangerous ordeal。A raid in which her twin brother was maimed and nearly killed? She arrives to tend to him after the raid, having encountered no obstacles on the way。 (hide spoiler)]And on it goes。 At a certain point, I stopped caring because I know the narrative would never let anything truly bad happen to her。 Oh, she can witness her loved ones suffer and she can suffer from that, but that's about it。 (view spoiler)[Even the scene in which the High King strikes her elicited no reaction, because it was so quick and just honestly petty - petty on part of a tyrant on a power trip, and petty on part of the narrative because it felt like a half-hearted attempt to garner sympathy from the reader。 (hide spoiler)]Part of me wonders if the story would have been better-served with another point of view to offset the monotony of Languoreth's life, or even just to tell the story entirely instead of letting her do it。 And that's just sad, because the point of this book is to explore the origins of the Arthurian legends from a little-known character who is supposed to have a unique perspective as a woman and as the sister of the most mysterious and crucial character in the canon。 。。。more

I absolutely love this book。 Such an interesting look at both early Scotland and the life of the sister of the man we know as Merlin, really placing the legend of king Arthur in history in a way nothing else has for me。

I listened to this one as an audiobook and loved the Scottish narrator, but it was a bit hard to keep everything straight。 I looked at the character lists and map in a physical copy to help me。 This is a pretty in depth historical fiction so if you’re someone who only likes to dip their toes into the genre this probably is not a great choice。 It was clearly well researched and has an in depth author’s note at the end。 The setting is rich and atmospheric and the characters are dimensional and int I listened to this one as an audiobook and loved the Scottish narrator, but it was a bit hard to keep everything straight。 I looked at the character lists and map in a physical copy to help me。 This is a pretty in depth historical fiction so if you’re someone who only likes to dip their toes into the genre this probably is not a great choice。 It was clearly well researched and has an in depth author’s note at the end。 The setting is rich and atmospheric and the characters are dimensional and intriguing。 I think it is really neat how the author is bringing light to a largely forgotten historical figure。It is kind of a slow burn throughout and I enjoyed it whenever I listened but didn’t find it to be quite as gripping as I had hoped。I’m a little torn on whether I’m going to continue in the series。 I’m curious about what will happen, but the next book sounds pretty heavy and this one wasn’t a new favorite or anything。Trigger/content warnings: decent amount of murder and death, infidelity, mentions of sexual assault and physical abuse, a couple sexual scenes。 Also a heads up that there is kind of a general feeling of sadness throughout。 。。。more

Fantasy I think was based in part on the conflicts between druids and early Christians – and the beginning of the characters behind the Arthurian legends。 The cover blurb promotes this as cross between Game of Thrones and Outlander and that set up high expectations that could not be met。 But as the book progressed, I found it well done enough for me to want to finish。

Loved this on audiobook。 Such good storytelling, rich character development and a world that was fun to get lost in。

I love a good story about Merlin, and this one is based on lots of research by this author and others, of the existence of Merlin and his twin sister in 6th century Scotland。 (Not his original name, by the way。)I would suggest reading the author's notes before reading the book, as it gives an idea of how accurate the events within the story actually are。 This is the 1st novel in a trilogy, and I plan to read the next 2 novels as well。 I love a good story about Merlin, and this one is based on lots of research by this author and others, of the existence of Merlin and his twin sister in 6th century Scotland。 (Not his original name, by the way。)I would suggest reading the author's notes before reading the book, as it gives an idea of how accurate the events within the story actually are。 This is the 1st novel in a trilogy, and I plan to read the next 2 novels as well。 。。。more

A little slow to start but it drew me in until I couldn’t put it down。 It had all the action, drama and romance of Outlander, but the characters are mostly true historical figures and many of the events, battles, etc are historical as well。 Told from the perspective of Langoureth, Merlin’s (from King Arthur’s story) twin sister。 She is a heroine for the ages! Can’t wait to read the next one in the series!

The problem I have is that it doesn't feel like it can stand alone as a novel, there are various climax points, but not a main one and it is evident the idea is to continue reading the series, which is ok, just not my preference。What I loved was that it is based on a theory for whom Merlin was (no magicians in the book) in real life, and I had no idea until the last section read by the author who described her research about this。 Pretty cool。 The problem I have is that it doesn't feel like it can stand alone as a novel, there are various climax points, but not a main one and it is evident the idea is to continue reading the series, which is ok, just not my preference。What I loved was that it is based on a theory for whom Merlin was (no magicians in the book) in real life, and I had no idea until the last section read by the author who described her research about this。 Pretty cool。 。。。more

Delightfully read。 The narrator really makes a difference。 The atmosphere of Scotland comes through and you find yourself emerged in these complex proud characters。 The first of a Trilogy, you gather background, learn weaknesses and loyalties, suffer losses, rejoice in love and cheer on your favorites。

Rosie Larmonth

A lot of good points, the big thing for me was pacing。 If you like a slow burn in a long book, then this will likely match you more then it did me。 Characters were alright, some really strong secondary characters。 Great world building!

Tia

At times a bit predictable but over all wonderful。 The world is immersive, the characters vivid, and the writing is smart。

New addition to my favorite book list and Author! Well written with an excellent story line。 A historical novel based on a period rarely chosen。 The author has combined historical accuracy blended with fictional elements seamlessly。 Excellent read!

Beautiful!Beautifully written with words that paint a picture of ancient times。 If you love the Outlander series you will enjoy this story。

I loved this book so much。 Historic fiction with another twist and tangent of the King Arthur story。 Beautiful character development。 I was thoroughly immersed in their lives。

3。5 rounding down。 The entire book felt like a setup for the next, and the ending left a lot to be desired。

The making if a Queen!Did not want the book to end。 Truly enjoy this time period。 Author did a fine job of allowing the reader to feel the emotions of each character in the book。

Very exciting and interesting storyThis book kept me interested all the time。 This book is for someone who likes history, monarchy, and a little bit of drama。

This is a fascinating book about a real life person who might be the sister of the man who becomes Merlin。 It takes place during the 6th century which is a time period I know little about。 It takes place in a time when Christianity is pushing to control the area and push the Druids out。 There is a lot of intrigue and spying going on as differing sides try to be in control。 This book also tells about courts and kingdoms and how power is sought。

Jenny Skells

3。5 rounding down to 3。 Was a fast read and I enjoyed the storyline but there were times I found the writing a little choppy。 Also didn’t love the ending of this first book, but I’ll probably read the other books in this trilogy。

I have long been an admirer of all things Arthurian, this book is no exception!I was absolutely enchanted with this tale。 I admired the protagonist greatly, and empathized with her apparent lack of choice with regard to her own life’s journey。 And that scene in the stable with a young Languoreth & Maelgwn? Whew!

Shannon Guilmet

Starts slow but then it cannot be put down

Veronica Lindsey

Good mystical, historical Celtic tale。 Will read the next one too。

4。5 ⭐️s A wonderful book! I am a sucker for all things Scotland, and I absolutely love historical fiction。 This particular story was based on the legends of Merlin, King Arthur, but most importantly, the Lost Queen, Languoreth。 I loved reading about her and the “Old Way。” The blurb on the front says, “Outlander meets Camelot” and although there were similar elements as Outlander, it is unique and incredibly interesting。 I’m excited to read more from this author as this was my first book by her : 4。5 ⭐️s A wonderful book!
